Irish MEP Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan has called for the legalisation of cannabis as he shared a photo of his own cannabis plant growing in Belgium, where the plant is legal.
Flanagan has previously admitted to safely growing the herb on his balcony and vaping it before going for a run.
He argues that using legal cannabis means he knows exactly what he is using and does not give money to criminal gangs.
Flanagan has been a long-time campaigner for cannabis legislation and has criticised the current laws that prohibit cannabis possession, which he believes have ruined people’s lives.
Belgium has a more relaxed approach to cannabis laws than Ireland, where possession of the drug is illegal. In Belgium, cannabis is decriminalised for personal use and cultivation of up to one plant is allowed. However, selling and transporting cannabis is still illegal.
