Marijuana through the mail on the rise

(March 16) -- Marijuana traffickers are taking advantage of our national postal service like never before, according to new statistics from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.

The agency, which handles everything from mail fraud to parcel theft, reported a 400 percent increase in seizures of marijuana packages between 2007 and 2009. That amounts to more than 43,000 pounds of intercepted marijuana last year.

Random drug tests show marijuana is most popular among Canadian military ranks

OTTAWA — Marijuana is the illegal drug of choice in the Canadian Forces, according to the first random tests of the entire military.

Almost one in 20 Forces members - 4.7 per cent - "recently" used illicit drugs, says the newly released study based on random urine samples.

'Head shops' the target of bill limiting the sale of pipes to tobacco shops

TALLAHASSEE — It would be more difficult to sell carburetor pipes, chillums and chillers in Florida under a bill approved today by a panel of state lawmakers.

Don't know what those items are? Most members of the House Finance and Tax Council didn't either. Not that that stopped them from approving the bill 16-0.

Marijuana Bill Clears New Hampshire House

Concord, NH — New Hampshire’s House voted Wednesday to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults, but the victory was followed immediately by the governor’s pledge to veto the bill.

The House voted 214-137 to send a bill to the Senate to allow adults to possess one-quarter ounce or less of the substance. It also would decriminalize transporting less than one-quarter ounce of the drug.

Marijuana user loses his case based on religious defense

GEORGETOWN — In what is likely a first-of-its-kind case in Colorado, a judge here convicted an Avon man of marijuana possession Tuesday, despite his claim that the charges violated his First Amendment rights because he needs cannabis for religious purposes.

Trevor Douglas, 25, told the court he uses cannabis as a religious sacrament, similar to the use of bread and wine in Catholic Holy Communion. He holds membership in two churches that espouse such beliefs and said he was trained by his parents to use marijuana in holy ceremonies.
