Birmingham mum jailed for smuggling £18,000 worth of cannabis into country

A BIRMINGHAM mother who was caught smuggling £18,000 worth of cannabis into the country from Jamaica has been jailed.

A judge heard that Donna Ives, who was travelling with her adult daughter when they were stopped by customs outdoor cannabis marijuana leafsofficers at Birmingham airport, had become involved in a bid to pay off debts.

At Warwick Crown Court Ives, 46, of Mosshouse Close, Lee Bank, was jailed for 12 months after pleading guilty to being involved in illegally importing the cannabis.

Prosecutor Esther Harrison said that on August 5, Ives and her adult daughter were stopped at the airport after returning from a week’s holiday in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

In her case customs officers found seven packages containing a total of 6.29 kilos of herbal cannabis with a street value of just over £18,000.

When questioned, Ives said she had been given £2,500 to book the holiday and to provide her with some spending money while she was there.

She explained that she had agreed to take part in the smuggling because she had money difficulties, but insisted that her daughter knew nothing about what she was doing.

Michael Duck, defending, said that despite working hard, Ives’ income did not cover her outgoings and she had debts of in the region of £5,500.

Recorder Christopher Hotten QC said: “There is only one outcome here, and that is custody.”
