RABAT (AFP) — Moroccan customs officers seized 19.5 tonnes of cannabis resin worth about 17.3 million euros (24.5 million dollars) at the northern port of Nadir, officials said Thursday.
The drugs were concealed in a lorry transporting frozen octopus from a seafood processing plant in the southern town of Agadir and the Italian driver and his Spanish companion were arrested late Wednesday.
The officers used a scanner to find 668 packets of cannabis, which were destined for Spain. A large sum of money in foreign currency was also found.
The seizure was the third largest this year, following hauls in Casablanca of 32 tonnes and in Tangiers of 21 tonnes.
