A 22 years old man from Drumleck Drive in the Shantallow area of the city has been fined £150 after admitting walking into Strand Road Police Station with £20 of cannabis inserted inside his body.
At Derry Magistrate’s Court yesterday, defence solicitor Seamus Quigley described the offence as “a cheeky offence which might give a clue as to where the cannabis was concealed.”
The defendant Sean Cullen was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital to have the cannabis surgically removed from his body.
The court was told that police became suspicious about Cullen’s behaviour when he voluntarily went to Strand Road police station in relation to other matters.
District Judge Greg McCourt was told by a prosecution barrister that “something was not quite right with Cullen’s reaction in the police station when he was asked if he’d recently taken drugs.”
A destruction order for the recovered cannabis was granted by the district judge.
