KALISPELL, Mont. — The Whitefish City Council has decided to temporarily ban medical marijuana shops in the city limits, while it develops zoning rules for such shops.
The council voted 4-3 Monday for a six-month ban on medical marijuana shops.
The city’s planning department requested the temporary ordinance after it received several inquiries about zoning for the stores.
Whitefish City Manager Chuck Stearns says medical marijuana shops have a right to exist, but the city wants to find the appropriate place for them.
Whitefish doesn’t have any medical marijuana shops yet, but owners of a hydroponic gardening store across the street from a middle school say they have been incorrectly linked to medical marijuana. Jed McDonald says his store seeks to help people grow their own produce in their homes.
