A LARGE cannabis farm has been discovered in a disused church.
Police were called to the old St James Church in Ramsden Road, Wardle at about 10am on Thursday after receiving reports of a break-in.
Inside officers discovered a large number of cannabis plants.
Three men aged 22, 23 and 25 were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to produce cannabis and remain in police custody for questioning.
It is believed that every room in the building, including the church tower was filled with plants.
Police were still at the scene investigating as the Observer went to press.
The church closed more than 10 years ago.
A planning application to convert the listed building into apartments was approved but never completed.
Wardle resident George Caygill said: “It is absolutely disgusting but this is the sort of thing that goes on in this day and age.”
